Fulham Football Club: A Rich History on the Banks of the Thames

Fulham Football Club is a storied English professional football club with roots deeply planted in the heart of London. Established in 1879, Fulham holds the distinction of being the oldest professional football team in the city. Currently competing in the Premier League, the highest tier of English football, Fulham boasts a remarkable journey that spans over a century.

A Rollercoaster Ride Through the League Tables

Throughout its existence, Fulham has experienced the highs and lows of English football, having played in the top flight for a total of 24 seasons. The majority of these appearances came in two distinct periods – the 1960s and the 2000s. The latter period was marked by the arrival of chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed, a pivotal moment in the club’s history, as Fulham climbed from the depths of League Two (then Division Three) in the 1990s to achieve Premier League status.

Glory Days and Near Misses

Although Fulham has yet to secure a major trophy, the club has come agonizingly close on several occasions. In 1975, while competing in the Second Division, Fulham achieved the remarkable feat of reaching the FA Cup final, their only appearance in the prestigious competition. However, they fell short, losing 2-0 to West Ham United. Years later, in 2010, Fulham tasted European success, reaching the final of the Europa League, only to be edged out by Atlético Madrid in a thrilling extra-time encounter in Hamburg, losing 2-1.

A Legacy of Legends

Over the years, Fulham has nurtured a wealth of footballing talent, producing a number of British legends who have graced the pitch with skill and passion. Notable names like Johnny Haynes, George Cohen, Bobby Robson, Rodney Marsh, and Alan Mullery have all left their mark on the club’s history.

Home Sweet Home: Craven Cottage and Motspur Park

Fulham calls Craven Cottage, a charming ground nestled on the banks of the River Thames, its home since 1896. This picturesque stadium has witnessed countless triumphs and heartbreaks, and remains a beloved symbol of the club’s identity. The club’s training ground, situated near Motspur Park, serves as a training hub for the Fulham Academy, where young aspiring footballers develop their skills and dream of one day playing for the first team.
