The 1960s might have been a period of relative calm for Viking, but the 1970s saw their return to the top of Norwegian football. Viking were an unstoppable force, conquering the league four times in a row from 1972 to 1975. They even achieved the coveted double in 1979, winning both the league and the cup. This incredible success was fueled by a blend of brilliant leadership and outstanding talent.
The Architect of Success
The foundation for this golden era was laid by the innovative manager Kjell S. Andreassen in 1972. However, Viking had a unique approach to management, switching managers every year! This might seem unusual, but it didn’t hinder their success. Sverre Andersen guided the team to victory in 1973, followed by Stuart Williams in 1974 and Olav Nilsen in 1975. In 1979, Tony Knapp was at the helm, overseeing their historic double victory.
A Star-Studded Team
Beyond the managers, Viking boasted a roster of exceptional players. Olav Nilsen, a midfielder, was a key figure throughout the first half of the decade, earning the legendary nickname “Olav Viking”. His teammate, Svein Kvia, another midfielder, was also a shining star, winning the prestigious Norwegian Player of the Year award multiple times.
The team was a true collective effort, with several other players making significant contributions. Arvid Knutsen, Reidar Goa, Hans Edgar Paulsen, Erik Johannessen, Inge Valen, Johannes Vold, Svein Hammerø, Gunnar Berland and Trygve Johannessen all played vital roles in bringing Viking back to the top of Norwegian football. Their names will forever be etched in the club’s history.
A Legacy of Triumph
The 1970s were a time of incredible success for Viking, a period defined by consistent winning and outstanding individual performances. The club’s resilience and ability to adapt under different managers proved their strength and depth. These were truly golden years for Viking, a testament to the power of teamwork and the unyielding pursuit of excellence.
