A Musician’s Journey: From Copenhagen to the World Stage

Mathias Jensen is a talented musician with a career spanning over a decade. Music has taken him on an incredible adventure, from the streets of Copenhagen to the world’s most renowned jazz venues. With his acute musical sensitivity and captivating stage presence, he has become a highly sought-after artist.

This is the story of Mathias’ journey, a tale woven with dedication, passion, and the pursuit of musical excellence.

From Early Beginnings to Jazz Immersion

Mathias’ musical journey began at the tender age of nine when he taught himself to play the piano. This early passion for music blossomed as he embraced the electric bass at ten years old. Music quickly became an integral part of his life, a constant companion on his path.

Formal musical training followed at the talent program at Hørsholm Music School, Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, and MGK. It was during these formative years that Mathias fell head over heels for jazz, drawn to its improvisational spirit and captivating rhythms. The double bass became his instrument of choice, and he embarked on a deeper exploration of this genre.

A Berlin Odyssey and the Rise of HOLON TRIO

In 2013, Mathias crossed the ocean to Berlin to pursue a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance. He immersed himself in the vibrant music scene, learning from and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists like Greg Cohen, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Hollenbeck, and Jim Black. These musical giants helped shape his artistry, pushing him to new heights of creativity.

During this time, Mathias gained valuable experience playing with various bands and ensembles in Berlin, notably the HOLON TRIO. This trio, known for its unique blend of jazz and contemporary sounds, quickly gained recognition. In 2015, they won the International Burghausener Jazzpreis and received a dedicated feature on Bayerischer Rundfunk. This award marked a significant milestone in their journey, propelling them further into the spotlight.

The New York Chapter and a Masters of Music

In the fall of 2018, Mathias’ journey took him to New York City, the undisputed heart of the jazz world. He enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music to pursue his master’s degree, studying under legendary bassist Buster Williams and renowned composer Jim McNeely. These mentors provided invaluable guidance, shaping his musical vision and pushing him to new creative heights.

Mathias graduated in May 2020 and returned to Copenhagen due to the global pandemic. However, his passion for music never faltered. He was commissioned to compose an orchestral piece that premiered in Hamburg in 2021. The piece, performed by HOLON Trio and Ensemble Reflektor, was a testament to his evolving musical voice. It was later recorded and released on Paschen Records on the album “Ad Astra”.

Returning to New York and a Debut Album

In early 2022, Mathias returned to New York City, where he is now in high demand, collaborating with a diverse array of talented artists, including Oscar Noriega, Martha Sanchez, Cecil Alexander, Kevin Sun, Max Light, Dabin Ryu, Angelica Sanchez, and many others. This vibrant collaboration allows him to continue to evolve as a musician, pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic landscapes.

This constant evolution culminates in the release of his debut album as a bandleader on the label Fresh Sound. This album, set to be released in the fall, promises a captivating blend of jazz, contemporary influences, and personal expression.

Mathias Jensen’s journey is an inspiring tale of dedication, passion, and the relentless pursuit of musical excellence. From his early beginnings in Copenhagen to his current position as a respected artist in the international jazz scene, he has left an indelible mark on the world of music. His music continues to captivate audiences, leaving them with a sense of wonder and a profound appreciation for the power of improvisation and expression.
