How many adventures can one experience in thirteen years? This question might seem unanswerable, but for Marko Arnautović, the answer is: many. He’s traveled the world, played in different leagues, and met countless people, all while leaving his mark on the beautiful game. Now, he’s back where it all started – Inter Milan.
The Roots of a Footballer
Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1989, Arnautović’s journey began amidst the industrial backdrop of Floridsdorf. His father, Tomislav, a former footballer himself, instilled a love for the sport in his son. Arnautović’s early days were spent playing with his dad, honing his skills under the watchful eyes of the setting sun. This is where the story of his career takes root.
Early Days and a Move Abroad
Arnautović’s talent shone brightly as he moved through various youth clubs in Austria, including Austria Wien, First Vienna, and Rapid Wien. But his roots remained with Floridsdorfer AC, the club that first witnessed his passion. In 2006, at the young age of 17, he embarked on a new adventure, joining FC Twente in the Netherlands. This move marked his introduction to the world of professional football. He made his debut in 2007, playing against Enschede and then making his European debut against Getafe later that year.
From Twente to Inter and Beyond
Arnautović’s career took off in the 2008/09 season. He scored 12 goals for Twente, attracting the attention of numerous big clubs. He chose Inter, a decision that led him to spend a season in Milan, a year that would be etched in the club’s history as its most successful. However, his time there was limited to just three appearances.
A World of Football
The following season, Arnautović started his journey around the world, beginning with Werder Bremen. In 2013, he landed in England, joining Stoke City where he became a fan favorite. He helped the Potters avoid relegation four times, showcasing his dedication and commitment. Next, he moved to West Ham, playing for two seasons and scoring 21 goals.
New Horizons in China and Italy
In 2019, Arnautović embraced a new challenge, signing with Shanghai SIPG in China. This marked a move to a different footballing culture, one filled with new experiences and challenges. The pandemic, however, forced him to make a tough decision: to return to Europe. He chose Italy and Bologna, where he flourished, experiencing his most prolific season in 2021/22.
A Complete Striker
Arnautović is a physically imposing striker, but he’s also incredibly technically gifted. He can score with both feet, making him a complete and versatile player. He’s also an icon for the Austrian national team, holding the record for the most appearances with 108 caps.
Back to Where It All Began
Now, he’s back at Inter, the club that gave him his first taste of Serie A football. He’s driven by the same ambition that led him to Milano in 2009, ready to leave his mark on the Italian giants once again.
