A Giant Among Men: The Story of Jón Daði Böðvarsson

Jón Daði “The Scythe of Selfoss” Böðvarsson is a legend in his hometown of Selfoss, Iceland. He’s so big that he’s considered a local landmark as well as a resident. Born in 1992, Jón Daði was already 5’11” tall by the age of eight. His imposing stature made him a natural leader, and he was named captain of every youth team he played for.

A Prodigy Emerges

One memorable pre-season match between dads and lads for the under-12s team, Jón Daði scored a remarkable triple hat-trick, leaving the opposing goalkeeper completely demoralized. His ninth goal was so spectacular that it sent the goalie into a state of shock, turning him into a recluse.

From Local Hero to International Star

After making a name for himself in youth soccer, Jón Daði turned professional, scoring 17 goals in 65 league matches for his hometown team, Selfoss. His talent couldn’t be ignored, and in 2013 he moved to Norway to play for Viking FK. He quickly impressed in Norway and soon found himself playing in Germany with Kaiserslautern. Eventually, his prowess on the field caught the attention of English clubs, and Jón Daði made his way to the Premier League.

A Fearsome Force

Even renowned manager Jaap Stam, known for his tough demeanor, was intimidated by Jón Daði’s imposing presence. At Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jón Daði became a fan favorite, but a management change sent him to Reading FC. Stam, however, was thrilled to have the Icelandic striker on his team, promising to start him in every game. Jón Daði lived up to the expectations, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances for Reading this season.

International Ambitions

While Jón Daði has been a consistent goal scorer at the club level, his international career has been less successful. He has been struggling to find his form since scoring his first goal for Iceland at Euro 2016 against Austria. But the Grapevine is confident that Jón Daði will break out of his slump and become a star on the international stage in the upcoming World Cup in Russia.
